Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue for another day across four divisions of the country due to the active southwest monsoon, according to an alert issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
The weather alert, released Wednesday, stated that the downpour is likely to occur in parts of the Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna, and Barishal divisions between 10am on Wednesday and the next 24 hours.
There is a possibility of landslides in the hilly regions of the Chattogram Division due to intense rainfall. In addition, metropolitan areas in Dhaka, Chattogram, and Khulna may face temporary waterlogging.
Dhaka recorded 77mm of rain in the 24 hours to 6am on Wednesday, Meteorologist Tariful Newaz Kabir said.
The highest rainfall in the country during this period was recorded in Feni at 399mm.
However, the meteorologist noted that the rain is expected to ease in the next 24 hours.
Apart from Feni, significant rainfall was also recorded in Noakhali’s Maijdee Court, where 208mm of rain fell. There was another 201mm in Patuakhali, 180mm in Sitakunda, 168mm in Bhola, and 162mm in Barishal.
The BMD classifies rainfalls exceeding 88mm over a period of 24 hours as very heavy, while 44–88mm is heavy, 23–43mm moderately heavy, 11–22mm moderate, and 1–10mm light.
In its regular bulletin, the BMD said that a low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and surrounding regions remains in the same position, prompting it to instruct the country’s maritime ports to maintain local cautionary signal No. 3.
In the last 24 hours, the highest temperature in the country was recorded in Nilphamari’s Dimla at 34.8 degrees Celsius, while the lowest was in Tangail at 22.7 degrees Celsius.
