A Dhaka court has granted police three days to interrogate three men, including key suspect Moin Uddin, in an extortion case over an incident at the Centre for Kidney Diseases and Urology Hospital in Dhaka's Shyamoli.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam passed the order on Tuesday after a hearing on a remand plea filed by the case’s investigating officer.
The two others sent on remand are MB Swapan Kazi and Md Shawon Hossain.
State lawyer Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon said police had sought seven days' remand for the three suspects.
Additional Public Prosecutor Azizul Haque Didar said the prosecution had sought approval of the remand plea, while defence lawyers applied for bail.
“After hearing both sides, the court granted three days’ remand for each of them,” he said.
Earlier on Monday, police secured a four-day remand for four alleged associates of Moin — Falan Mia, Rubel, Faruk Hossain Sumon and Liton Mia.
The case centres on an alleged attempt to extort Tk 500,000 from the hospital founded by Kamrul Islam, a physician known for his humanitarian work.
After reports emerged on Friday that money had been demanded at the hospital in the name of the ruling BNP's youth affiliate Jubo Dal, a delegation led by the organisation’s President Abdul Monayem Munna and General Secretary Mohammad Nurul Islam Nayan visited the hospital in Shyamoli around 1:30am.
They spoke to Prof Kamrul about the incident and assured him that action would be taken.
The following day, Abu Hanif, the hospital’s operation theatre in-charge, filed an extortion case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station against Jubo Dal activist Moin Uddin and 7-8 unidentified others.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) later arrested seven people, including Moin, in connection with the case.
Wing Commander MZM Intekhab Chowdhury, director of the RAB’s legal and media wing, said Moin was arrested in Narail's Kalia.
According to the case statement, Moin had been intimidating and harassing the complainant in various ways in an attempt to extort Tk 500,000.
It says that around 8am on Friday, Moin and a group of unidentified people went to the complainant’s home on Road No. 3 in Shyamoli and asked for the door to be opened.
When the complainant’s wife opened the door, Moin allegedly demanded Tk 500,000 immediately and threatened to harm the family if the money was not paid.
At the time, the complainant was in another room of the house, according to the case.
The complaint also says the group later gathered around 50 to 60 people in front of the hospital, where they created chaos and commotion, shouted slogans and used abusive language.
It alleges that they tried to deliberately divert the incident in another direction.
The first information report (FIR) says the suspects attempted to create disorder in front of the hospital’s emergency department, raising fears of serious disruption to operations at the facility.
Police brought the situation under control after being informed of the incident, the complaint says.
