Local politicians have issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the removal of the principal and a female teacher of Daokandi Government College in Durgapur, who were attacked on campus after reportedly refusing to pay extortion money.
The ultimatum was given during a press conference at a restaurant in the city’s Shaheb Bazar Zero Point on Saturday afternoon.
Attendees included Tafsirul Quran Mahfil President Abdus Samad, expelled local BNP leader Akbar Ali, and other local figures.
The speakers threatened a mass movement if Principal Abdur Razzaque and teacher Aleya Khatun Heera are not removed within the deadline.
The ultimatum came a day after the BNP expelled one of its local leaders over the incident, which saw on Thursday several teachers get beaten at the institution.
The college was also vandalised in one of the attacks.
A video of a local man striking a female teacher, who was later identified as Aleya, went viral immediately after the incident, drawing widespread social media criticism.
During the press conference, Samad claimed that media reports had "distorted" the incident, wrongly portraying them as “extortionists”.
According to Samad, they entered the college at 11am to seek accountability regarding alleged financial irregularities.
He claimed there were no legal restrictions like Section 144 in place at the time.
He further alleged that the altercation began when Aleya mistreated and attacked them first.
Expelled Joynagar Union BNP vice president Akbar claimed he was not even at the scene during the clash.
He argued that his expulsion from the party was based on social media "propaganda" and called for a neutral investigation.
The college administration tells a different story.
Aleya alleged that certain individuals had been visiting the college repeatedly to demand "accounts", which she characterised as a veiled attempt at “extortion”.
She claimed she was targeted for siding with the principal.
Principal Razzaque said ever since he took charge four months ago, various factions of the BNP had been demanding money from him.
He alleged that the conflict erupted because he refused to entertain these demands.
Durgapur Police Station’s Inspector Rafiqul Islam said police were already present at the scene on Thursday to prevent unrest.
He noted that some individuals forced their way into the college, leading to vandalism and an assault.
