The authorities at Jahangirnagar University have decided to abolish the quota for the grandchildren of freedom fighters in the 2024-25 undergraduate admission process.
The decision was made during a meeting of the university’s central admissions committee, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Kamrul Ahsan, on Thursday, according to member secretary Syed Mohammad Ali Reza.
Applications for first-year undergraduate admissions will open on Jan 1 and continue until Jan 21, Ali Reza said, adding that the admission tests are tentatively scheduled between Feb 9 and Feb 19.
On Dec 1, students held a human chain at the university demanding the abolition of the quota for freedom fighters’ grandchildren, the elimination of the vice-chancellor’s quota, and reforms to the ward quota system.
Ali Reza confirmed that a policy decision had been taken to scrap the quota for the grandchildren of freedom fighters.
However, he said decisions on the vice-chancellor’s quota and the ward quota would be made at a subsequent meeting.
The university has also expanded the number of admission units from six to 10 for the upcoming academic session.
Ali Reza said students could now apply under separate units for the Faculty of Law, the Institute of Information Technology, or IIT, and the Institute of Comparative Literature and Culture.
