A clerk has been sent to jail pending trial as the only suspect over the alleged rape of a sixth-grade girl rescued from a locked room of a school in Kushtia’s Mirpur Upazila.
Hamidul Islam was produced before a court on Saturday afternoon, leading to his detention in custody, said Court Police Inspector Zahirul Islam.
He was named as the only suspect in the rape case the girl’s mother filed at Mirpur Police Station, said its chief Shahidul Islam.
The girl, 11, was rescued from a room on the third floor of the Chhatragachha Secondary School around 8pm on Thursday with her hands and feet tied and her mouth taped.
Police primarily claimed to have found evidence of rape at the suspected crime scene.
Hossain Imam, resident physician at Kushtia General Hospital, said they initially found signs of rape in the child.
She is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital's Gynecology Ward.
Hamidul was first detained over the incident, before being sued.
Shahidul said they have already interrogated him before sending him to court.
“We’ll file a remand plea to question him on Sunday,” he said.
Recounting the incident, the girl’s grandmother said the child left home for school around 9am on Thursday but did not return in the afternoon when other students came back.
“When I asked other children, they said everyone had left school together,” she said.
Failing to find her, classmates returned to the school in the afternoon.
They reportedly asked Hamidul to open the locked building, but he refused to hand over the key, she added.
Later in the evening, family members forced open the school gate after obtaining the key and entered the building, finding the girl inside.
“We found sandals on the ground floor, her school bag on the second floor, and on the third floor, my granddaughter was found with her hands and feet tied and tape over her mouth,” the grandmother said.
The child was first taken to Mirpur Upazila Health Complex and then referred to Kushtia General Hospital.
Assistant Headmaster Abul Kalam Azad said they held the SSC-2026 batch farewell event from 10am to 1pm on Thursday.
“As there were no regular classes, students left after the event. Teachers also left after finishing routine work,” he said.
They finally came to know that the girl was rescued around 8pm.
