Six days have passed since a deadly fire broke out at a chemical warehouse in Gazipur's Tongi, but authorities have yet to file a case in connection with the incident.

On Saturday, the death toll from the blaze climbed to four after Fire Service officer Khondakar Jannatul Nayeem passed away during treatment at Dhaka’s National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute. Nayeem, a warehouse inspector, had suffered burns over 42 percent of his body while battling the flames, which also claimed the lives of two other firefighters.

Addressing the matter, Assistant Police Commissioner of Tongi Zone Md Mahidul Hasan said: “A case will be filed within a day or two.”

Earlier, on Friday, shop worker Babu Hawladar died from injuries suffered in the fire. Meanwhile, firefighters Mohammad Nurul Huda and Shamim Ahmed succumbed to their injuries on Wednesday and Tuesday, respectively.

Shamim and Huda had been completely burnt while attempting to control the fire at the Sahara Market chemical warehouse on Sept 22.

Preliminary investigations by the Fire Service indicated that the warehouse stored large quantities of flammable chemicals, which caused the fire to spread rapidly and made containment difficult. Twelve firefighting units were deployed to tame the blaze.

Locals said the tin-roofed warehouse belonged to a garment factory. After a sudden explosion inside the warehouse, people inside fled, but a subsequent blast from a chemical drum injured four firefighters.
