Bangladesh’s interim government has once again summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to express concern over the recent protests near the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and the vandalism of a Bangladesh visa centre in Siliguri.
Foreign secretary Asad Alam Siam called in the Indian envoy on Tuesday to convey Dhaka’s concerns, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In a statement, the ministry said the interim government had conveyed its “grave concern” over what it described as acts carried out by "extremist elements". It also raised alarm over "violent protests" staged outside several Bangladeshi diplomatic missions in India.
Dhaka said such incidents endangered the safety of diplomatic personnel and undermined principles of mutual respect, peace and tolerance. It condemned what it termed as acts of "premeditated violence or intimidation" against diplomatic establishments.
The government urged Indian authorities to carry out a thorough investigation, take steps to prevent a recurrence and ensure the security of Bangladeshi missions and related facilities across India. It also called on New Delhi to meet its international obligations to safeguard diplomatic personnel and premises.
This is the second time in 10 days that the Indian high commissioner has been summoned.
Earlier, on Dec 14, Verma was called in after Bangladesh sought India’s cooperation in the arrest of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity during the July Uprising, and of those accused of opening fire on Sharif Osman bin Hadi, a leader of the July movement.
