Rescuers have failed to find 2-year-old Sajid, who is trapped in a deep borehole in Rajshahi’s Tanore Upazila, even after digging throughout the night.
The Fire Service resumed excavation work after removing soil to a depth of 35ft, but the child's location could not be determined. New efforts are under way to locate the child using pipes and search vision.
Hundreds of anxious people are waiting at the spot.
Didarul Alam, assistant director of Rajshahi Fire Service and Civil Defence, said: "A 35-foot-deep section has been dug up using an excavator next to the hole where the child fell. Now the Fire Service rescue team is digging a tunnel inside the excavated hole."
"If the child is not found in that hole after the tunnel is dug, it won’t be possible to dig further. Then an attempt will be made to rescue the child from that hole using other techniques because the depth of this borehole is 150 to 200ft."
The Fire Service official believes the child is trapped somewhere inside the borehole.
Locals and the Fire Service said that on Wednesday, Sajid fell into an abandoned deep borehole while going to the nearby lake with his mother in Koelhat Purbapara village of Pachander Union in Tanore.
Locals tried to rescue him but failed and informed the Fire Service. Within an hour, the local Fire Service unit arrived and provided ventilation.
Then two more units from Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj joined them and started the rescue operation. First, they tried to determine the child's location in the borehole through search vision cameras.
As the child's location could not be found at a depth of 35ft, digging work was carried out at a nearby spot overnight with an excavator.
Deputy director of the Rajshahi Fire Service and Civil Defence Md Manzil Haque said, “Even after digging down to 35 feet, Sajid couldn’t be traced. A pipe was then inserted into the hole, but it could not go down after a certain depth. Search vision lights will be used to confirm what is stuck under the pipe.”
He said, "Soil is being removed again with an excavator to balance the pillars at the base of the pipe. For now, the digging with an excavator is completed. Now, efforts are underway to dig a tunnel from the excavated hole to enter the borehole where the child fell."
