The Bangladesh government has called on the country to be economical in its energy use as the ongoing unrest in the Middle East has disrupted global energy supplies.
Instructions have also been given to avoid unnecessary use of lighting and for people to use public transport instead of private cars to conserve fuel.
The guidance came in a media statement from the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources on Wednesday.
The statement said that due to the conflict in the Middle East, there is uncertainty about the supply of energy in the expected amount and at the scheduled time from various possible sources. As a result, temporary disruptions or adjustments may be required in the supply of energy according to the current demand within the country.
It was also noted that the production of electricity and fertiliser may decrease slightly as a result.
The ministry, however, said the measures have been issued with caution to avoid causing hardship to the public during Ramadan.
It also sought the cooperation of the general public, asking them to be frugal and thrifty in their use of using electricity and energy.
In addition, traders and law enforcement agencies have been instructed to be proactive in not selling diesel and petrol in the open market.
District administrations, police, and Border Guard Bangladesh have been asked to take necessary steps to stop fuel smuggling.
The ministry says it has already taken all possible measures to minimise the negative impact of the global unrest and initiatives have been taken to procure fuel from various sources.
The public has been urged to be patient and cooperate with the government's initiatives to deal with this temporary situation.
The emergency review meeting held under the chairmanship of Energy Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud was attended by State Minister Aninda Islam Amit, the secretary of the Energy and Mineral Resources Divison, the chairman of BPC and PDB, and relevant officials, the notification said.
