Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner SM Mosleh Uddin Ahmed has said that “necessary force” will be used in operations against snatchers and extortionists, adding that police will act in self-defence when confronted with attacks.
On Tuesday, he said police would aim to use “minimum force”, but would be compelled to take protective measures where officers came under attack or faced armed resistance.
The commissioner spoke on Tuesday night following an incident earlier in the day in Dhaka Udyan, where police personnel came under attack with sharp weapons during an operation.
Earlier on Tuesday morning in Adabor, a bKash agent was hacked when snatchers robbed him.
Later in the afternoon, when police launched an operation in the locality, the Adabor Police chief and a sub-inspector were attacked with machetes.
Police opened fire during the incident, leaving two suspects injured.
Four people -- Rubel, Kashem, Amir and Joy, all identified by single names -- were detained. Among them, Amir and Rubel sustained bullet injuries.
Speaking at a press conference at the Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner’s office, the DMP chief said police had initially tried to arrest the suspects without using firearms.
“But when they attacked police with weapons, there was no option but to use firearms in self-defence,” he said.
He said Geneva Camp in Mohammadpur remained under daily police scrutiny, with widespread activities related to drugs continuing to drive crimes such as snatching.
“Not only Mohammadpur, but drives against drugs are ongoing across all of Dhaka city,” he said.
Claiming that sustained operations against criminals and extortionists had reduced crime in several areas, the commissioner said efforts were under way to ensure public safety and maintain order across the capital.
“Due to specific incidents and crime patterns, we have to focus more on some police station areas, including Mohammadpur,” he added.
