Rumours that Information and Broadcasting Advisor Nahid Islam has resigned have been dismissed, according to an official from the Chief Advisor’s Office.
The speculation spread on Sunday evening, suggesting that Nahid had stepped down to join a new party.
A television channel reported that his vehicle did not bear a flag as he left the CAO after meeting Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus.
Attempts to reach Nahid by phone for clarification went unanswered.
However, bdnews24.com reached out to the Chief Advisor’s Office and found a different account.
Abul Kalam Azad Mazumder, the deputy press secretary to the chief advisor, told bdnews24.com: “I asked Advisor Nahid about this. He said, ‘no, I have not resigned’.”
Nahid has been in discussions for weeks as the potential convenor of the new political party being formed under the initiative of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizens' Committee.
In response to journalists' questions on Feb 17, Nahid said: “Those outside the government, including the Anti-discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizens' Committee, have long spoken about forming a political party.
"I have said that there is a possibility I might join that party. If that happens, I will resign from the government. I have not made a final decision yet, but there is a possibility. Maybe by the end of this week, I will be able to tell everyone.”
The convening committee of this new political party, which will feature key leaders from the July Uprising that ousted the Awami League government, is expected to be announced in the last week of February.
The party will be formed with a convening committee of 150 to 200 members, including at least 30 percent new faces who are not part of the current committee.
This number will gradually be increased to 300, while parallel efforts will be made to establish district committees.
The Anti-discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizens' Committee are actively setting up local committees across Bangladesh to expand the party’s structure.
Efforts are also underway to finalise the party’s constitution, ideology, declaration, and electoral symbol.
On Tuesday, Nahid said he would make a final decision on resigning from his advisory position and joining the new political party by the end of the week.
