A fatal soil collapse at a Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) construction site in Chattogram has left two workers dead and two others injured.
The incident took place at 4am on Thursday while excavation work was under way near Singapore-Bangkok Market for pipeline installation.
Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel later recovered the victims from the site and rushed them to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared two of them dead.
The dead have been identified only as Rakib and Tushar, the latter hailing from Dinajpur, though further details of their identities are yet to be confirmed.
Sagar and Ershad, both identified with single names, are receiving medical care at the hospital for their injuries.
Fire Service Deputy Director Md Jashim Uddin said four workers were trapped under soil during digging work for a water pipeline at the site.
He added rescue teams pulled them out and transferred them to hospital.
The project is being managed by the Chinese contractor Sinohydro.
Md Ariful Islam, a superintending engineer at Chattogram WASA, explained that a "trial pit" was being dug for the sewerage line when the soil gave way in the early hours.
He added that the agency has formally demanded an accident report from the firm.
The engineer mentioned that officials have met with the bereaved families and are negotiating compensation with the contractor, though he admitted that no payout could truly atone for the loss of life.
Sub-Inspector Nurul Alam, in charge of the hospital police outpost, confirmed the two survivors remain under observation in the casualty ward.
