The Bangladeshi government has called for a swift investigation into the killing of two Bangladeshi students in Florida and demanded that those responsible be brought to justice.

Speaking to reporters at the foreign ministry on Sunday, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said: “We want the United States to conduct a proper and speedy investigation and ensure those behind this brutal incident are identified and brought to justice.”

Zamil Ahmed Limon and Nahida Sultana Bristy, students of the University of South Florida, had been missing since Apr 16.

Police recovered Limon’s body on Friday. Bristy’s family was later informed by police that she had also been killed, although her body has yet to be found.

Following the recovery of Limon’s body, police arrested his 26-year-old roommate, US national Hisham Abugharbieh, and brought two counts of premeditated murder against him.

The state minister said the foreign ministry, Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC, the US State Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), along with other agencies, are in regular contact over the matter.

She added that she had personally spoken to the victims’ families, including Bristy’s brother and Limon’s father.

On repatriation, she said the bodies would be sent back after completion of post-mortem and other legal procedures, with government support.

“The Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare is assisting in the process. We are trying to bring them back as soon as possible, but it is subject to legal procedures. We are in close contact with all stakeholders in the United States,” Shama said.
