Police have detained Md Ibrahim Khokon, a key coordinator of the Chittagong Port Protection Struggle Council, a day after protesters suspended an indefinite strike against the government’s decision to lease the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) to DP World.
Khokon was detained in the port area on Monday evening, police said.
Confirming the development, Chattogram Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Aminur Rashid told bdnews24.com:
“A RAB team detained him and handed him over to Port Police. Police will take further action after verification.”
Workers at Chittagong Port began a work stoppage on Jan 31 under the banner of the Port Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, protesting plans to lease the NCT to the UAE-based DP World.
The protest later continued as a continuous strike under the banner of the Chittagong Port Protection Struggle Council.
Khokon, who also serves as general secretary of the Port Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, was among the leaders of the movement.
The strike was suspended on Sunday.
