Followers of the mystic poet Fakir Lalon Shah have sent an open letter to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, urging the government to ensure security and an uninterrupted celebration of Dol Purnima, one of the most important festivals observed at the Lalon shrine.
Lalon Academy’s General Secretary Amjad Hossain sent the letter on Saturday on behalf of 13 cultural and spiritual organisations.
The letter notes that the festival, scheduled for Mar 3, is a tradition practised by Lalon himself and is celebrated by humanists worldwide, transcending religion, caste, and ethnicity.
Lalon devotees outlined eight specific demands to protect the interests of the Sadhus (saints) and the Lalon philosophy.
The demands include ensuring spiritual freedom so that Sadhus can perform rituals according to traditions without interference.
They also called for strengthening security measures at Cheuria’s Lalon Akhra and other shrines during major festivals, including the death anniversary of Lalon Shah.
They demanded protection against illegal occupation of shrines and harassment, alongside strict legal action against hate speech, social provocation, and defamation targeting the Baul and Sadhu communities.
The letter was backed by 13 organisations, including Lalon Volunteer Organisation, National Sadhu Sangsad (Dhaka), Daulat Shah Foundation (Meherpur), and institutions from Chuadanga and other districts.
The devotees expressed hope that the government’s attention would ensure the preservation of Lalon’s humanist philosophy and the safety of his followers.
