The government has directed that all programmes to celebrate the Bengali New Year 1433 must conclude by 6pm, pledging heightened security across the country on the occasion.
The home ministry mandated the deadline in a media statement on Thursday, issuing a number of instructions and restrictions for Pahela Baishakh.
The directives are:
>> No new entry will be allowed at Ramna Park, Suhrawardy Udyan, Dhaka University, Hatirjheel and Rabindra Sarobar and other event venues after 5pm.
>> Lanterns, fireworks, gas balloons and vuvuzelas will be completely prohibited nationwide on security grounds.
>> Strict measures will be taken to stop motorcycle or car racing on the 300 Feet Road.
>> Dhaka University's Faculty of Fine Arts will maintain strict vigilance to ensure the security of the “Baishakhi procession”.
>> Participants in the procession will not be allowed to wear masks.
>> Masks can be carried in hands and masks made for exhibition cannot be displayed in such a way that they cover the user’s face.
>> Participants will have to join the procession at the beginning and no one will be allowed to enter it halfway through.
>> It has been requested that the Dhaka University (TSC) Metrorail Station be closed on the first day of Baishakh for security reasons.
>> No vehicles without the university stickers will be allowed to enter the DU area after 7pm on Apr 13.
>> Bags, backpacks, matches or gas lighters cannot be carried.
>> Children must carry a note with their identity.
The statement says K9 unit will be deployed at Ramna Botomul, Dhaka University and other important places.
“There will be watchtowers, CCTV cameras and adequate archways at important points,” it adds.
According to the ministry, plainclothes detective surveillance and mobile courts will be conducted nationwide to check eve-teasing, snatching and pickpocketing.
Firefighting units, ambulances and medical teams from the Fire Service will be on standby at all major venues, it said, adding that a diving team will be stationed at Ramna Lake to prevent any accident.
