The price of green chillies in Dhaka has come down from last week’s Tk 400 per kg, but still hovers above Tk 300, leaving shoppers feeling the pinch.

Sellers cite continuous rainfall as the main reason, claiming it has disrupted supply chains and limited availability.

On Friday, a visit to several markets in Mohammadpur, including the Shia Mosque Market, Krishi Market, and Town Hall Market revealed no significant relief in the prices of vegetables either, with most selling between Tk 70 and Tk 80 per kg.

Hasan Ali, a vendor at Town Hall Market, told bdnews24.com: “Today we’re selling green chillies at Tk 320 per kg. The price has come down from last week’s Tk 400.”

While shopping at the market, private sector employee Narayan Saha said: “Couple weeks ago, I could get green chillies for Tk 10. Now, I have to spend Tk 30 to 40 for the same amount.”

The price of Sonali chicken remained unchanged at Tk 280-290 per kg, while broiler chicken rose slightly to Tk 170 from Tk 150-160 last week.

Layer chickens remained steady at Tk 300 per kg, while country chicken was selling at Tk 550 per kg, down from last week’s Tk 580.

Prices of eggs also increased. A dozen local chicken eggs sold at Tk 270, up from Tk 250.

Farm-produced red eggs were priced at Tk 120 per dozen, with white eggs being Tk 10 cheaper.

Duck eggs were priced at Tk 200 per dozen, down from Tk 220, while quail eggs fell by Tk 5 to Tk 45 per dozen.

Pakistani onions were selling at Tk 65 per kg, up from Tk 55, and mid-sized varieties were available at Tk 60 per kg, up from Tk 50.

Ginger prices showed a downward trend. Large Chinese ginger dropped to Tk 180 per kg from last week’s Tk 240, while smaller local varieties were selling at Tk 160, down from Tk 180.

Large garlic was priced at Tk 270 per kg, up from Tk 220, although the smaller variety dropped to Tk 120 from Tk 160.

Potatoes were one of the few stable items, priced at Tk 25 per kg, same as last week.

Vegetable prices have been soaring since Eid ul-Azha, with prices showing little sign of stabilising.

Okra is priced at Tk 50-60 per kg, same as last week.

Ridge gourd is priced at Tk 70 per kg, pointed gourd at Tk 60-70, sponge gourd at Tk 70, and spine gourd at Tk 40.

Taro roots are fetching Tk 90-100 per kg, and tomatoes are selling Tk 160 per kg, up from below Tk 100 last week.

Carrots cost Tk 70-80 per kg, radish Tk 50, and cucumber Tk 80-100 per kg.

Lime prices have remained stable, with a set of four selling at between Tk 15 and Tk 30, depending on size and variety.
