Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has met with Religious Affairs Advisor AFM Khalid Hossain.
A press statement from the Ministry of Religious Affairs said the meeting took place at the prime minister’s house in Islamabad on Thursday morning.
Sharif welcomed the delegation and described the relationship between Pakistan and Bangladesh as rooted in history, culture and friendship, adding that the ties “will further strengthen in the coming days”, according to the statement.
It also added that Sharif referred to his recent meetings with Bangladesh’s chief advisor in New York and Cairo.
He praised Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus for his “visionary leadership” and “contribution to poverty eradication”, while also welcoming his desire to deepen relations between the two countries.
Khalid handed over a letter from Yunus to the Pakistani prime minister.
In it, the chief advisor expressed sympathy for the government and people of Pakistan over the unprecedented floods there, conveying condolences to the families of victims of the disaster.
“In this difficult time, the people of Bangladesh stand by the brotherly people of Pakistan,” Yunus wrote, according to the press statement.
“We firmly believe that under your able leadership, the people of Pakistan will overcome this challenge through their extraordinary patience and tolerance.”
The letter also said Bangladesh was prepared to provide cooperation and assistance in relief and rehabilitation if needed.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed the resumption of direct air travel between Dhaka and Karachi and emphasised expanding student exchanges in agriculture, science, technology, theology and medicine.
The Pakistani government has already granted 500 scholarships to Bangladeshi students from the honours to PhD level.
Earlier in the week, Khalid met in Lahore with former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
That meeting, on Monday, focused on areas of mutual interest, including cooperation between Punjab and Bangladesh in flood management and agriculture.
