A team of Indian medical specialists has visited the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery to assist in the treatment of those injured in the fighter jet crash at Milestone School and College in Dhaka’s Diabari.
The team arrived at the institute on Thursday morning and held discussions with doctors on duty.
One of the doctors at the burn institute said, “The Indian specialists spoke with our physicians. They inquired about multiple aspects related to the burn victims. Our team had detailed discussions with them. They also spoke virtually with a team of Chinese doctors.”
Dr Mohammad Nasir Uddin, director of the institute, said: “We will share a full update at a briefing at 8pm. I prefer not to comment on specific matters right now.”
The specialised team includes doctors and nurses from Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Safdarjung Hospital, two of India’s top medical centres for burn and plastic surgery care, the Indian High Commission said in a statement on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs announced that a team of experts, including doctors and nurses carrying “necessary” medical supplies, would soon be dispatched to Dhaka to treat the burn victims.
“They will make an assessment of the condition of patients with recommendations for further treatment and specialised care in India as necessary,” it added.
“Additional medical teams may also follow depending on their preliminary assessment and treatment.”
On Monday, a Bangladesh Air Force fighter jet crashed into the Milestone School and College premises, triggering a fire that left 30 people -- mostly children -- dead so far.
Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka announced that an emergency medical team from China will arrive on Thursday evening to assist with treatment.
The team, which includes burn specialists and nurses, is being sent at the request of the interim government of Bangladesh, according to the statement issued by the embassy.
“Upon arrival, the medical personnel will head to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery to offer assistance and conduct evaluations of the injured,” it added.
