The body of SM Tareq, a Bangladeshi expatriate worker killed in a missile attack in Bahrain amid the ongoing Middle East conflict, has arrived in Dhaka.
The remains were flown in from Dammam, Saudi Arabia, via a Gulf Air flight, according to the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment.
Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury, State Minister Md Nurul Hoque, and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam were present at Shahjalal International Airport to receive the coffin.
Tareq, a resident of Azimpur Union in Chattogram’s Sandwip Upazila, had been working in Bahrain for 27 years.
He was employed at the “Drydock” shipyard company and had last visited his family in Bangladesh about 18 months ago.
Tareq was killed during an Iranian missile strike on Mar 2, which also injured two other Bangladeshis -- Azim from Sandwip and Kamrul from Tangail, both identified with a single name.
Ariful noted that six Bangladeshis have lost their lives in the Middle East conflict so far.
"We are working in a coordinated manner to accelerate the repatriation of those killed," he said.
The government provided the bereaved family with an immediate grant of Tk 35,000 for funeral expenses and an additional Tk 50,000 in cash through the Wage Earners' Welfare Board.
The family is also set to receive Tk 300,000 in financial assistance and Tk 100,000 from insurance.
Nurul confirmed that Tareq is the third Bangladeshi victim whose body has been repatriated since the conflict escalated.
Shama highlighted the government’s ongoing diplomatic initiatives to ensure the safety of expatriates.
"We are negotiating to extend the visas of our workers affected by the current situation," she said.
