Police have said CCTV footage shows two men forcibly entering the Dhaka residence of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Anwar Ullah shortly before his body was recovered from Rajabazar.
The 66-year-old, who served as vice-president of the West Rajabazar ward unit of Jamaat, was found with his hands, feet, and face bound.
Police believe the thieves broke into the house around midnight on Monday, and tied him up, which led to his death.
Anwar was a homoeopathic doctor by profession.
After being found, he was rushed to Square Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Inspector Azizur Rahman said his body has been handed over to his family after a postmortem at Suhrawardy Hospital.
He said, “His relatives have gone to their village home with the body, and a case will be filed when they return.
“Police are trying to identify and arrest those involved.”
Citing Anwar’s relatives, police said 93.28g of gold and Tk 500,000 in cash were missing from his house.
Jamaat leaders condemned and protested the murder, expressing deep shock.
They demanded that all those involved be arrested promptly, brought to justice, and given exemplary punishment.
When asked whether the murder had any political links, Inspector Aziz said: “The matter can be confirmed after an investigation.”
