Former member of parliament Sabina Akter Tuhin, who was elected for the seat reserved for women in the 2024 national election, have failed to speak to the media as police covered her mouth while escorting her to prison from the court.
The incident took place on Monday in front of Revati Mansion of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judges’ Court.
Sabina and 29 others were produced in court in a sedition case.
The case was filed over allegations of taking part in a Zoom meeting of the “Joy Bangla Brigade” and engaging in “activities aimed at overthrowing the interim government and anti-state acts”.
Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina is among the 286 people named in the case.
Around 2pm, the suspects were taken to Dhaka Special Judge’s Court wearing helmets and bulletproof jackets.
As the judge was on leave, however, acting judge Rabiul Islam set Mar 2 as the next date for the hearing.
Sabina and the others were taken back to the lockup cells of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court around 2:18pm.
On the way, Sabina attempted to speak to journalists present there. At that point, a female police officer covered her mouth. The suspects were then taken back to jail.
After a while, the female detainees were transported in a prison van to Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur.
Hearings on framing charges in the case began on Jan 21.
Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi argued in favour of framing charges on behalf of the state.
Defence lawyers later sought discharge for 20 of the 30 suspects who are currently in jail in connection with the case.
A total of 30 people, including Sabina, have been arrested and are now in jail, while 256 others, including Hasina, remain absconding.
According to the case statement, several hundred leaders and activists took part in a Zoom meeting of the “Joy Bangla Brigade” on Dec 19 last year, led by USA Awami League vice-president Rabbi Alam.
During the meeting, Hasina allegedly made “anti-state remarks” before the participants.
“She instructed them to overthrow the current interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus. The speech later spread across the country through social media,” the complaint said.
Sabina was a reserved-seat MP in the 10th Parliament. She sought an Awami League nomination from the Dhaka-14 constituency in the 11th national election but failed to bag it.
Later, after failing to secure a reserved seat again, the Jubo Mohila League leader announced that she was quitting politics “out of frustration”.
Police arrested her from her home in Nawabganj, Dhaka, on Jun 22 last year.
