Four people severely burnt in an explosion at a gas cylinder storage facility in Chattogram’s Chandanaish have been transferred to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for advanced treatment.
Six others remain under care at the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
Dr S Khaled of the unit told bdnews24.com on Thursday that the four were moved to Dhaka because of the seriousness of their conditions.
The patients sent to Dhaka are Mahbubur Rahman, 45, Md Yusuf, 32, Md Idris, 27, and Riaz, 20.
Mahbub sustained burns on over 50 percent of his body, Yusuf 67 percent, Idris 60 percent and Riaz 40 percent.
All four are also suffering from injuries to their airways.
Khaled said while the six admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital were not in critical condition, their airways had been damaged in the explosion.
Doctors at the unit identified the patients as Aqib, with burns on 40 percent of his body, Sourav with 30 percent, Kafil Uddin with 45 percent, Harun with 45 percent, Saleh with 45 percent, and Liton with 20 percent.
The Fire Service and local residents reported that the explosion occurred on Wednesday morning during the loading and unloading of gas cylinders at a facility owned by Mahbubur Rahman in Bailtali Union of Chandanaish Upazila.
Ten people, including the owner, were burnt when the fire broke out. The facility is located along the boundary between the Chandanaish and Satkania Upazilas.
NO PERMIT
The Department of Explosives later confirmed that the facility had no approval to operate and said it appeared that “cross-filling” of gas was being conducted there rather than loading and unloading of cylinders.
A team from the department later visited the site after the blast.
“We have inspected the accident site. There were many cylinders there. But they did not get any license from the Department of Explosives to store or sell them,” Assistant Explosives Inspector Sakhawat Hossain told bdnews24.com.
“We initially believe that gas was being ‘cross-filled’ in that storage. The administration will take action in this regard,” he said, referring to the transfer of gas from one cylinder to another, a practice allowed only at authorised filling stations.
Satkhania Upazila Administrator (UNO) Khondaker Mahmudul Hasan said part of the facility was located in his jurisdiction, though the owner belongs to Chandanaish.
“After this accident, we will conduct a drive against such establishments in the Satkania area,” he said.
Chandanaish Upazila Administrator (UNO) Rajib Hossain also said a crackdown would follow.
“We are aware of the matter. A drive will be launched against these companies that are running illegally,” he told bdnews24.com.
