A road construction project meant to improve connectivity in Madaripur has drawn sharp criticism after residents uncovered banana trunks placed inside the foundation of a guide wall.
The incident occurred at the Charkakair intersection in the Shiruail Union under a project by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).
The matter came to light after local residents spotted the anomaly and shared it on social media, sparking widespread outrage across the district.
A visit to the site near Charkakair Mosque revealed that banana trunks had been placed underneath the brickwork of the guide wall in multiple sections.
Locals also alleged that the bricks and pillars used in the project were of poor quality.
"This road is vital for thousands of people," said Habibur Rahman, a local.
"Apart from the banana trees, they used substandard materials. The contractor sub-leased the work to labourers and never looked back, while LGED officials failed to supervise the site," he complained.
The project, which began six months ago to connect Sadekhabad to Munshikandi, had already been criticised for its sluggish pace.
Alamgir Jamaddar, the contractor in charge, shifted the blame onto the masons.
"The workers didn't inform me. I never instructed them to use banana trees," he claimed, adding that he would redo the work correctly.
Shibchar LGED Sub-Assistant Engineer Jamal Shikdar admitted to a lack of oversight.
"We haven't visited the site since the elections. Taking advantage of our absence, this irregularity occurred. We will ensure the trees are removed and the work is redone."
Madaripur Executive Engineer Badal Chandra Kirtaniya said, "Such negligence in government work is unacceptable.”
