Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has emphasised the need for greater visible unity among political parties against “fascism”, while alerting that signs of fresh “conspiracy” by defeated factions are already emerging.

The interim prime minister held a meeting on Wednesday, a day after sitting with four political parties amid student protests over the deadly jet crash at Diabari's Milestone School and College.

This time, Yunus met leaders from 12 more parties and a political alliance.

The meeting began at 4:15pm at his official residence the State Guest House Jamuna, according to a statement from the Chief Advisor’s Office (CAO).

At the meeting, Yunus said “differences and competition” are inevitable, yet parties must present a more obvious unity against “fascism”, warning that the defeated camp could “exploit” any disunity.

“We had organised a programme on the first anniversary of the July Uprising to remember the past, bringing all political parties together,” he added. “This would have visibly demonstrated our unity against ‘fascism’.

“But before even a year has passed, signs of conspiracy by defeated forces are becoming apparent.”

According to the CAO, all parties at Wednesday’s meeting agreed on maintaining political and mass unity against “fascism” and urged the chief adviser to adopt a firmer stance on law and order.

They voiced full support for reforms, justice and the electoral process, and proposed holding more regular all-party meetings in the run-up to the next election to help fend off “fascist threats”, it added.

The meeting began at 3pm, said Azad Majumder, the chief advisor’s deputy press secretary.

Among those attending were Syed Hasibuddin Hossain of the Rastro Songskar Andolon, Zonayed Saki of the Ganosamhati Andolon, Mojibur Rahman Monju from the AB Party, Shahidullah Kaiser of the Nagorik Oikya, and Nurul Haque Nur of the Gono Odhikar Parishad.

On Tuesday night, Yunus met leaders of the BNP, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, and the National Citizen Party (NCP).

After the meeting, Law Advisor Asif Nazrul told a briefing that Yunus had called the parties to discuss the recent situation in the country.

“The discussion was held in a very cordial atmosphere. Each political party said they have no differences over unity against ‘fascism’,” he said.

He added, “The chief advisor told the political parties that it would be helpful if their unity became more visible.

“Whether through constructive programmes or any other form, standing together will give people a sense of reassurance.”

As a sign of such unity, Nazrul said, the parties noted that despite their differences, they all respond when the chief advisor calls.

“Another example of this unity,” he added, “is the parties’ regular participation in the National Consensus Commission meetings.”

Monday’s military jet crash at Milestone School and College in Dhaka’s Diabari killed 29 and left 68 hospitalised.

The incident triggered a wave of anger and protests across the city.

In response to the tragedy, students protested on Tuesday, demanding six points including compensation for the victims.

They confined Advisor Nazrul and Education Advisor CR Abrar inside the school campus throughout the day.

The situation worsened when several hundred students forced their way into the Secretariat after delays in announcing the postponement of Tuesday’s HSC exams.

They vandalised property, triggering clashes with police as the area quickly descended into chaos.

Both Jamaat and the NCP accused the ousted Awami League of orchestrating the unrest.

The Islami Andolan expressed similar suspicions.
