The worst earthquake in decades in Bangladesh has killed five people and injured more than 100 in its epicentre — Narshingdi.

The fatalities included a father and his son, who were crushed to death after an eave collapsed on them.

A wall collapsed on a man, killing him. Another man died falling from a tree. The fifth death was caused by a heart attack, confirmed local authorities.

The dead have been identified as Delwar Hossain Ujjal, 40, and his son Md Omar, 8; Kajem Ali Bhuiyan, 75; Nasir Uddin, 65; and Forkan Miah, 45.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department confirmed the earthquake originated between Narshingdi Sadar and Palash Upazilas at 10:38am on Friday. The earthquake, which measured 5.7 on the Richter scale, lasted for 26 seconds.

The father and son died when the eaves of their house collapsed on them after bricks from an under-construction building at Chinishpur in Narshingdi Sadar fell on the roof of their residence. The incident also left two daughters of the family injured. The daughters are currently under treatment at Narshingdi Sadar Hospital.

“Omar, his son, and two daughters were leaving the house when the tragedy struck,” said Zakir Hossain, Omar’s uncle.

Kajem died when the mud wall of his house collapsed on him.

Forkan, a resident of Shibpur, was on a tree when the earthquake struck, tossing him out of it. He died at the Upazila Health Complex.

Nasir, a resident of Kazirchar, became so panicked that he started running from his field, collapsing on the way. He died of a heart attack.

The injuries resulted from panicked people scrambling for an escape out of their houses or workplaces or shops after the earthquake hit. Vertigo and heartache also led to falls of many people, leading to injuries.

Over 50 people took treatment at Narshingdi Sadar Hospital alone.

The earthquake also triggered a fire at the Ghorashal thermal power plant, leading to the suspension of power generation, affecting industrial production, including fertiliser production.

Numerous buildings, including Narshingdi Circuit House and Palash Upazila Health Complex, developed cracks, which also appeared in fields.
