A writ petition has been filed in the High Court challenging the Election Commission’s (EC) decision on the redrawing of the Faridpur-4 parliamentary seat, amid protests involving arson and vandalism.
On Monday, BNP Chairperson’s Advisor Md Jahirul Haque Shahjada Mia, Zia Shishu Kishore Sangathan’s President Shah Alam Reza, along with 16 others, submitted the petition.
Lawyer Mohammad Humayun Kabir Pallob moved the petition on their behalf, making the chief election commissioner and the EC secretary respondents.
Earlier that day, protesters demanding reversal of the boundary decision vandalised vehicles after storming Bhanga Police Station, before setting fire to the Upazila Parishad office. The incidents took place under heavy security during a pre-announced blockade programme.
The plea was filed in the afternoon. Lawyer Pallob said Faridpur-4 and Faridpur-5 had been two separate constituencies until 2008, when three Upazilas were merged to form a single seat.
He said there had been several protests and human chains over the years demanding restoration of the earlier division. The petitioners had also submitted an appeal during the EC’s public hearing, asking for the seats to be restored to their pre-2008 demarcation, based on the 1970 structure.
“But the Election Commission rejected that appeal, keeping Faridpur-4 unchanged with Sadarpur, Charbhadrasan and Bhanga Upazilas. At the same time, it cut Algi and Hamirdi unions from Bhanga and attached them to the neighbouring Faridpur-2 seat,” he said.
The petitioners are seeking an order for Faridpur-4 to consist of Charbhadrasan and Sadarpur, while Bhanga would form the separate Faridpur-5 seat as it did previously.
Earlier, another writ was filed to reinstate Bhanga’s Algi and Hamirdi unions under Faridpur-4. That petition, lodged last Tuesday by lawyer Pallob on behalf of BNP nomination aspirant Md Shahidul Islam Babul, Supreme Court lawyer Mahbubur Rahman Dulal and three others, sought cancellation of the EC notification that had shifted the two unions to Faridpur-2’s Nagarkanda.
