Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has expressed his hope for a fair trial in the alleged murders of two Bangladeshi students in the United States.
The minister made the remarks during a meeting with US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen at the Secretariat on Monday, according to a media statement.
The US side informed the minister that the alleged “murderer” has been arrested, it added.
On Sunday, Bangladesh called for a swift investigation into the deaths and demanded that those responsible be brought to justice.
Nahida Sultana Bristy and Zamil Ahamed Limon, both PhD students at the University of South Florida, were found dead in the US.
They had been missing since Apr 16.
Limon’s body was recovered on Friday.
Bristy’s brother Zahid Hasan Pranto, announced on Saturday that she had also died.
Local police in Florida arrested a 26-year-old US citizen over the deaths, charging him with two counts of first-degree murder.
Identified as Hisham Abugharbieh, the suspect was Limon’s roommate in Tampa, Florida.
During the meeting, the minister and the envoy also discussed strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in media, cultural, and knowledge sectors.
Emphasising press freedom, Swapon said it is also important to protect Bangladesh from misinformation and disinformation.
