A group of Mohammadpur residents, frustrated with the daily incidents of theft, mugging, robbery, and casualties, has given police a 72-hour deadline to bring down crime rates.
If the situation does not improve within the given timeframe, they plan to stage a sit-in at the police station.
On Saturday around 5pm, nearly 60 people went to the station to express their concerns and put forward a five-point charter of demand for their safety.
Parvez Hasan Suman, a representative of the group, told bdnews24.com: “Police inaction since the 5th of August has led to a surge in activities by muggers and the Kishor gang.”
“We went to the Mohammadpur Police Station to discuss our demands with the ADC [assistant deputy commissioner] and OC [officer-in-charge],” he added.
Parvez said police plan to meet residents on Sunday to discuss measures for controlling crime in Mohammadpur and to seek community support.
“A time will be set for a meeting with police, and they have assured us that they will bring the situation under control within three days,” he added.
The five-point charter of demand is as follows:
• Control theft and robbery incidents in the Mohammadpur area within 72 hours.
• Increase police patrols in crime-prone areas of Mohammadpur and ensure safety.
• Take appropriate legal action against arrested suspects.
• Action must be taken to curb the activities of the Kishor gang, the banned organisation Chhatra League, as well as to prevent extortion and violence.
• Assurance of legal assistance for public safety and the prevention of harassment.
