The vacation days for subordinate civil courts has been split into two phases totalling 30 days, instead of being taken consecutively for a full month.
The Supreme Court’s Appellate Division announced the decision in a press statement on Tuesday. Under the existing practice, subordinate civil courts observe their vacation throughout the entire month of December.
The decision was taken at a full court meeting on Monday with the participation of judges from both divisions of the Supreme Court.
According to the press statement, the full court meeting was held at the Supreme Court Judges’ Lounge, chaired by Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, with judges of the Appellate Division and the High Court Division in attendance.
The meeting decided that the vacation for subordinate civil courts would be observed in two phases: from Jun 1 to Jun 15 and from Dec 17 to Dec 31, instead of a continuous one-month break.
The decision will come into effect from 2026, the statement said.
It also said that, at the meeting, the chief justice briefed all attending judges on the activities and progress of the Supreme Court Secretariat.
He informed the full court that the secretariat’s operations are currently ongoing with the posting of 13 judicial officers and the required number of staff.
The chief justice also said that infrastructure development work for the smooth functioning of the Supreme Court Secretariat is progressing at a fast pace. Once construction is completed, the secretariat will operate from the second, third and fourth floors of the Supreme Court’s Record Building, he said.
