Nur Nabi Sarkar was supposed to return home to Bogura’s Shibganj for Eid-ul-Azha, marking the end of a decade-long struggle abroad.
Instead, his family now awaits his body following a tragic gas cylinder explosion in the Maldives.
The 27-year-old was among five Bangladeshi migrants killed early Friday at a construction site guest house on Digurah Island.
The blast reportedly occurred while the workers were preparing Sehri.
Nabi, the only son of Abdus Samad from Badagangnoi village, had not visited home once in his 10 years in the Maldives.
“He had finalised plans to return this time," said his nephew Md Mahbub. "Now we don't even know when his body will arrive."
The disaster has left the village in mourning.
At Nabi’s home on Saturday, neighbours gathered to comfort his grieving parents.
His father Samad pleaded with the government to expedite the repatriation of his son’s remains.
"I just want to see my boy’s face one last time," he sobbed.
The other dead workers have been identified as Taj Uddin Islam, Sadar Ali, Robin Molla, and Safikul Islam.
Two others, Jamal Uddin and Saddam Hossain, are currently undergoing treatment.
While the Bangladesh High Commission in Maldives confirmed the deaths, the victims' families remain anxious over the lack of a clear timeline for the repatriation of the bodies.
Shibganj Upazila administrator (UNO) Ziaur Rahman said formal procedures to bring the body back will commence once official confirmation is received from the High Commission.
