Former Awami League minister Dipu Moni has been denied bail in two murder cases filed over “killings” during the July movement in Dhaka.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashraful Haque passed the order on Tuesday after hearing a bail petition filed on her behalf by lawyer Rashida Akter.
Sub-Inspector Shah Alam of the Prosecution Division said the judge rejected the bail plea following the hearing.
One of the cases relates to the reported killing of scrap trader Md Monir, who joined student-led protests in the Chankharpul under Shahbagh Police Station on Aug 5, 2024, the day the Awami League government fell.
Monir was shot dead at the scene that afternoon.
His wife, Rozina Akter, filed a murder case with Shahbagh Police on Mar 14 last year.
The case names 351 suspects and includes another 500 unidentified individuals.
The second case concerns the “killing” of Riazul Talukdar, who was shot in the Topkhana area of Paltan on Aug 4, 2024.
Following the incident, his colleague Billal Hossain filed a case on Sept 12, 2024 against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 63 others.
Police arrested Dipu Moni in Baridhara of the capital on Aug 19, 2024.
The former foreign minister and education minister, who also served as a joint general secretary of the Awami League, is facing around 70 charges, including allegations of murder, attempted murder and crimes against humanity before and after the July movement.
