Individual taxpayers have demonstrated great enthusiasm for the online e-return filing system, with 10,202 filing their income tax returns for the 2025-26 fiscal year on the first day since the option became available.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) made the announcement in a press release on Tuesday.
On Monday, Financial Advisor Salehuddin Ahmed inaugurated the online e-return filing programme for the 2025-26 tax year.
When online filings opened on Sept 9 last year, 2,344 taxpayers filed their e-returns online on the first day.
This means the number of online taxpayers on the first day is over four times that of the previous year.
On Aug 3, the NBR issued a special order making it mandatory for all individual taxpayers across the country to file their income tax returns online (at www.etaxnbr.gov.bd).
However, the rule will not apply to certain groups, including senior citizens aged 65 or above, taxpayers who suffer from physical disabilities or have special needs, Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, and legal representatives filing on behalf of deceased taxpayers. For them, online filing will be optional.
If an eligible taxpayer cannot file online, they must submit a written application with valid justification to their respective tax zone's deputy commissioner by Oct 31. With approval from the additional or joint commissioner, they may then submit a paper return.
Last year, when online return filing was made mandatory for individual taxpayers on a limited basis, more than 1.7 million individual taxpayers filed their e-returns online.
Taxpayers can pay their taxes online using bank transfers, debit cards, credit cards, bKash, Rocket, Nagad or any other mobile financial service app. They can immediately print the e-return filing receipt and automatically print the income tax certificate after entering the necessary information.
In case of problems in filing income tax returns online, NBR staff are providing round-the-clock service through call centres and online to resolve these issues immediately.
