Metro rail operations have resumed from Motijheel to Shahbagh nearly seven hours after a fatal accident involving a fallen bearing pad.
Train services on MRT Line-6 between Agargaon and Uttara had already reopened in the afternoon. However, services between Shahbagh and Agargaon remain suspended.
A message posted on the Facebook page of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) on Sunday evening said: “For the information of passengers, metro rail services have been resumed from 3pm between Uttara North and Agargaon. Services from Motijheel to Shahbagh resumed at 7:15pm.”
A bearing pad from the metro rail line fell at Dhaka’s Farmgate around 12:15pm on Sunday, instantly killing a pedestrian.
Metro rail operations were suspended immediately following the incident.
Around 2pm, DMTCL Managing Director Faruque Ahmed said train services between Agargaon and Uttara would resume after 3pm.
Speaking to reporters at the site of the accident, he said: "It cannot be repaired unless the equipment arrive. Under the circumstances, it is not possible to resume the service on the Motijheel to Agargaon section for now. The metro rail will run from Agargaon to Diabari for the time being.”
Later in the evening, the DMTCL said services between Motijheel and Shahbagh would also resume.
Elastomeric bearing pads are installed on bridges or flyovers to absorb vibrations.
These pads are made of neoprene or natural rubber and are placed at the junctions of piers and viaducts. Some pads contain multiple layers of steel structures inside, with rubber on top, making them very heavy.
A roadside tea stall was also damaged alongside the pedestrian’s death after the metro rail pad fell, witnesses said.
