The Supreme Court has ruled that the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus is legal.
The seven-member full bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan gave the ruling at a virtual court hearing on Thursday.
Following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved the parliament.
He also sought the Supreme Court’s opinion through the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, asking whether an interim government could be formed under the circumstances.
A bench officer of the Appellate Division told bdnews24.com: “On Thursday, the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan issued a ruling in favour of the formation of the interim government.”
“The Appellate Division opined that in accordance with Article 106 of the Constitution, an interim government can be formed with a chief advisor and a few other advisors in the absence of parliament.”
According to the official, the ruling was issued before the interim government took their oath of office on Thursday.
