The Bangladesh government has rescheduled the date for the public holiday of Eid-e-Milad-un Nabi, the day on which Muslim devotees mark the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notice in this regard on Thursday.

Eid-e-Milad-un Nabi falls on day 12 of Rabi’ al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar. Bangladesh marks the occasion as a public holiday.

Rabi’ al-Awwal began on Aug 26 this year, the ministry said. Accordingly, Eid-e-Milad-un Nabi will be celebrated on Saturday, Sept 6. The holiday had previously been set for Friday, Sept 5.

All public, semi-public, autonomous, semi-autonomous, and private offices will be closed on the day, according to the notice.

However, electricity, water, gas, the Fire Service, port activities, cleaning activities, telephone, internet, the Postal Service, hospitals, medical services, transportation of medicines and medical equipment, and related vehicles and employees will not receive a holiday.

In addition, the holiday will not apply to institutions engaged in emergency duties.

Bangladesh Bank will decide whether banks will remain open on the day, while the Supreme Court will take the necessary decision regarding the courts.
