The Jatiya Party has been forced to curtail its workers’ conference in Dinajpur after police intervened at the venue.

The party said in a media statement on Friday that the meeting was originally scheduled for 4pm at Dinajpur Press Club auditorium, but police removed leaders and workers before the session could start.

Dinajpur Kotwali Police Station chief Mohammad Nuruzzaman said they blocked the gathering due to “political threats” linked to Sheikh Hasina’s verdict, adding that the organisers did not have administrative approval for the event.

Jatiya Party Co-chairman and former Rangpur mayor Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa and Secretary General Shameem Haider Patwary had arrived to attend the event.

On the police obstruction, Patwary said: “Police did not allow us to hold the programme on the excuse of security. Later, we stood briefly in front of the party office for 15–20 minutes, held a small gathering, and left.”

Unable to hold the conference at the Press Club, activists then gathered near Kotwali Police Station, in front of the district office, where leaders delivered short speeches.

During the address, Patwary said: “For three to four months, Jatiya Party has been facing obstacles. No matter how much obstruction comes, we bring more people the next time.

“We have the capacity to bring the north to a standstill, but we respect law and democracy. We want to cooperate with the administration.

“We do not care about anyone. We do politics and are prepared for jail or repression.”

He added, “Some parties call us ‘agents’ because if Jatiya Party contests the election, their vote calculations will collapse.

“The Jatiya Party is a 40-year-old party. We have served in government and opposition”

Patwary said, “Many want to remove us from the field. But without the Jatiya Party, there cannot be a fair election. Those responsible for violating their oath will be held accountable, and such a government will not last.”
