Dhaka, July 20 (bdnews24.com)—The first ever river police camp of the Dhaka metropolitan area has been launched at Mohammadpur.
State minister for local government Jahangir Kabir Nanak inaugurated the camp on Tuesday, which is being built on a private land donated by 'Chandrima Real State' on the bank of the River Turag.
In 2006, the government approved setting up of river camps in five crime-prone zones in the metropolitan area but they could not be launched for lack of land. The zones are Tejgaon, Wari, Mirpur, Lalbagh and Uttara.
The Turag and Buriganga fall within the boundary of five zones, police commissioner Shahidul Haque said.
Nanak said BNP-led Alliance government had done nothing for the welfare of the country.
"The present government has come to power with a pledge for public welfare," he said, adding that "installing river police camp is one of the welfare works of the government."
Inspector general of police Nur Mohammad said, "Safety has emerged as one of the fundamental rights of human beings."
"The inhabitants of the locality will feel more secure following the start of the camp and crime will be on the wane consequently," he said.
The police chief urged all to assist the police in making a crime free society.
"If any organisation like Chandrima Real State comes forward to donate land for the camp, the nation will be greatly benefitted, he said.
The state minister, police chief and police commissioner thanked Hazi Akkas Ali, owner of Chandrima Real State for donating the land.
When asked how many kilometres water way the five police zones will cover, the top two police officials said they were not sure.
Chaired by Abu Sayeed Bepari, commissioner of 46 ward, the event was addressed among others by Chandrima Real Estate director Sarwar Khalid and film actor Nader Khan.
