The newly formed government has made controlling commodity prices its immediate priority before Ramadan, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has said.
Speaking to reporters after the cabinet’s first meeting at the Secretariat on Wednesday, he said maintaining law and order and ensuring an uninterrupted power supply were also key priorities.
“The prime minister has advised us to focus on three issues -- keeping prices stable during Ramadan, maintaining law and order, and ensuring normal electricity supply, especially during Iftar and Taraweeh,” Swapan said.
He described the meeting as a preliminary discussion on urgent national concerns, adding that relevant ministries would soon submit action plans to the prime minister.
Labour State Minister Nurul Haque Nur echoed the position, saying the prime minister had instructed ministers to keep prices stable during Ramadan.
On implementation, Swapan said ministers would present short-term plans within a few days, after which steps would be taken in line with the prime minister’s directives.
Referring to the government’s political commitments, he said a 180-day programme would be prioritised to implement the previously announced reform agenda.
The minister also reiterated the government’s pledge to ensure the free flow of information and media freedom, saying work was under way to develop a “workable mechanism” based on recommendations from an earlier commission.
