A Dhaka court has placed former Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) chief Sheikh Mamun Khaled on a five-day remand for questioning in a murder case linked to the July Uprising.
Metropolitan Magistrate Siddique Azad issued the order on Thursday after a petition by the Detective Branch (DB) of police.
Mamun was arrested around 12:30am on Wednesday from his residence in Mirpur DOHS, Dhaka.
Investigating officer SI Kofil Uddin of DB police produced him before the court, seeking a seven-day remand.
According to the remand plea, on Jul 19, 2024, between 500 and 700 Awami League activists allegedly attacked a student-led protest at Mirpur-10’s Falpatti using crude weapons.
Acting on Mamun’s orders, gunfire was opened indiscriminately on protesters, it added.
The petition said Delwar Hossain was critically injured in the shooting and died on Jul 21 at a private hospital in Shyamoli.
The investigator told the court that “sufficient evidence” had been found indicating Mamun’s involvement.
Interrogation is needed to uncover the full sequence of events, arrest other named suspects, identify unknown suspects, and recover weapons used in the attack, he added.
Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi argued in favour of the remand, while defence lawyers Morshed Hossain Shaheen and Nazrul Islam Pakhi sought bail and cancellation of the remand.
Earlier, on Monday night, detectives arrested former three-star lieutenant general Masud Uddin Chowdhury from his Baridhara DOHS residence.
A day after he was placed on a five-day remand on charges of human trafficking, Mamun -- another influential former military figure -- was detained.
Mamun’s role during the 2007–08 military-controlled caretaker government and allegations of involving DGFI in political activities have long been debated. He was serving as a colonel during the period.
He joined DGFI in December 2007 as director (FSIB) and later served as director of the Counter Intelligence Bureau (CIB) in June 2008.
In 2011, under the Awami League government, he returned as DGFI director general, serving for about a year and a half.
He also served as vice-chancellor of Bangladesh University of Professionals and later headed the National Defence College as a three-star general.
In May 2025, a court barred Mamun and his wife from leaving the country following an Anti-Corruption Commission probe into alleged financial irregularities.
