A Dhaka court has sent an engineer to jail in a case over allegedly firing shots in the air, robbing Tk 1.9 million and injuring several people during a violent mugging at Dhaka’s Kadamtoli.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin on Wednesday rejected the bail plea of the suspect, Asaduzzaman Sabbir Mia, who was arrested a day earlier by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)
The court ordered him to jail on the request of the investigating officer.
Another suspect, Robu Mia, surrendered before the court and was granted bail, Prosecution Sub-Inspector Moazzem Hossain said.
RAB-10 arrested Asaduzzaman in New Jurain’s Alambagh on Tuesday around 7pm.
He was produced in court on Wednesday, where the investigation officer, Kadamtoli Police SI Zahirul Islam, sought his detention.
Defence lawyer Abdur Razzak argued in court that his client had been falsely implicated to harass him and should be granted bail, claiming there was no risk of absconding.
However, the complainant’s lawyer strongly opposed bail, telling the court that Asaduzzaman is the nephew of Jamaat-backed MP for Dhaka-4, Syed Zainul Abedin, and that the attack was carried out to exert influence through political backing.
“The suspect, along with others, looted Tk 1.9 million from the complainant. The money has not been recovered. If he is granted bail, the funds will never be recovered. He should remain in custody,” he said.
The incident dates back to the afternoon of May 6 near the “Dhaka Match” rail-line market in Kadamtoli.
According to the case statement, Md Hasan, a businessman, was travelling by private car when a group of attackers intercepted his vehicle, blocked the road and launched a coordinated assault with sharp weapons and firearms.
The attackers allegedly fired blank shots to spread panic, dragged victims out of the vehicle and beat them indiscriminately, leaving at least five to seven people, including Hasan, Rony, Motaleb and Nayan -- all identified by single names, seriously injured.
They then fled with the money. The injured were later rescued and admitted to hospital.
Hasan filed a case with Kadamtoli Police on May 7.
