The Election Commission has filed a general diary (GD) at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station after a scuffle broke out between representatives of the BNP and the National Citizen Party (NCP) during a hearing on the proposed boundaries of Brahmanbaria-2 and -3 constituencies.
The police complaint was opened on Monday, a day after the incident, but did not name any of the individuals involved.
“We did not name anyone. We informed police about the scuffle during the hearing,” EC Secretary Akhter Ahmed said.
He added the commission acted on its own initiative to notify police, and that any investigation would be a matter for law enforcement.
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police chief Imamul Haque said police were taking steps in line with procedure following the GD.
The fracas occurred on Sunday at the Election Building during a claims-and-objections hearing on the draft demarcation.
Tensions rose as the session progressed and the two sides clashed, before EC officials brought the situation under control.
The EC secretary then concluded the hearing and asked participants to leave the room.
At the hearing, BNP’s Assistant International Affairs Secretary Rumeen Farhana argued in support of the EC’s draft, while NCP Joint Chief Organiser Mohammad Ataullah presented arguments against it.
A scuffle broke out between the two sides in the midst of their submissions.
Later, at a press conference, NCP’s Hasnat described Rumeen as “BNP’s Awami League affairs secretary”.
On Monday night, Rumeen responded on Facebook, posting photos alleging Hasnat’s links to the Chhatra League and calling him a “beggar’s child”.
