The Opposition in parliament has staged a walkout, accusing the government of breaching a prior agreement reached by a special committee and questioning the neutrality of the speaker during proceedings.
Members of the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance, headed by Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman, left the chamber at around 7:37pm.
The Opposition alleged that a consensus reached by a parliamentary special committee on ordinances issued during the interim government period had not been honoured.
They specifically pointed to the July Uprising Memorial Museum Bill, 2026, saying that despite a recommendation for its passage without changes, three amendments were introduced to Section 8 before it was passed.
The issue triggered a prolonged exchange of arguments in the House involving the government and Opposition benches, the chief whip, law minister, home minister, and the speaker.
The Opposition said the changes violated the committee agreement and amounted to a “breach of trust” by the government.
During the walkout, Shafiqur said: “We are walking out of parliament today with deep regret.”
