The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is set to file cases against Rashed Khan Menon, former president of the governing body of Willes Little Flower School and College, over alleged irregularities in teacher recruitment and promotions.
Currently imprisoned, the former Dhaka-8 MP and ex-minister under the Awami League government faces two separate cases, confirmed ACC Director General Md Akhtar Hossain on Monday.
He said that one case will name Menon, the president of Bangladesh Workers Party, and 13 teachers among 20 suspects, while the second will list him among 38 as defendants.
Menon first served Sheikh Hasina as a civil aviation and tourism minister and later as minister for social welfare under the Awami League government.
Following a shift in power, he was arrested by police on Aug 22, 2024. Since then, the politician has remained in prison.
He is also facing multiple cases linked to killings during the attempts to suppress the July Uprising.
In the first chargesheet filed by the ACC, it is alleged that Menon and others, under the guise of “irregularities and deception”, deliberately organised a recruitment examination to appoint only 13 pre-selected candidates as teachers at Willes Little Flower School and College. Investigations have verified these allegations.
The chargesheet adds, “Despite lacking any legal authority to appoint teachers through a special governing committee, they conducted the recruitment process. No director general or representative, nor subject-specific teachers, were included on the recruitment board. Candidates were appointed without the NTRC certificates mentioned in the official notice.
“Candidates who scored highest in the written exam were denied the opportunity to participate in the oral test. The tabulation sheets and appointment letters were prepared even before the recruitment examination concluded.”
The ACC alleges that these teacher appointments were completed through such irregularities and corrupt practices.
