At least 662 people have been killed in road accidents in Chattogram city alone in the eight years since 2017, a report has revealed.
The report was presented at a media conference at the auditorium of the Metropolitan Police Lines Dampara in Chattogram.
It was prepared through an initiative by the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) and Chattogram City Corporation (CCC).
A media statement released by the CMP said it was the third initiative to publish a road safety report based on police records.
After analysing the data, the report included a map highlighting accident-prone locations, along with the types and trends of accidents in the port city.
It noted that road accidents substantially increased between 2019 and 2021, before plateauing at their highest level between 2021 and 2024.
Pedestrians were identified as the most vulnerable group, with 363 pedestrian deaths during the period studied.
People travelling in two-wheelers and three-wheelers were the next most at risk, accounting for 195 deaths.
The report blamed potential engineering faults for turning roads in the city unsafe.
Anisur Rahman Sohel, the chief engineer at the CCC, said they, in association with the CMP, are planning to take up a project to make the city’s roads safer based on the report’s recommendations.
The report was published under the Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) programme. Chattogram is one of the cities participating in the BIGRS programme, covering 27 cities and 2 states worldwide.
