Commemorating the anniversary of the July Uprising, the National Citizen Party (NCP) has unveiled a 24-point “manifesto for a New Bangladesh”, pledging a new constitution, the formation of a “second republic”, and justice for all July Uprising victims.
At the closing event of a month-long programme commemorating the Uprising, NCP Convenor Nahid Islam read out the declaration at Dhaka’s Central Shaheed Minar on Sunday.
According to Nahid, the original one-point demand for ousting the Awami League government has now evolved into a 24-point roadmap reflecting the new political reality.
He had previously announced the one-point demand from the same location a year ago during the final stages of the student-led anti-discrimination movement.
The manifesto pledges to dismantle “autocracy, dynastic rule and fascist structures” and establish an inclusive, democratic, and welfare-oriented "second republic".
Nahid also emphasised the need to constitutionally recognise the July Proclamation and the July Charter.
The NCP's directive calls for official recognition of the July Uprising and accountability for the violence that took place during the previous government’s attempts to suppress it.
Other major commitments include reforms to democratic institutions and the judiciary, establishing a service-oriented and corruption-free administration, restructuring of law enforcement to be citizen-friendly, strengthening village parliaments and local government, protecting independent media and civil society, ensuring universal access to healthcare and education policies aligned with national development.
