Millions of users across the world, however, remained unaware of the change until some Reddit users pointed it out in the subreddit /r/mildlyinteresting.

Look at the images and see if you can spot the difference.

Here’s what happened. The small ‘g’ was moved by 1 pixel to the right and the ‘l’ was moved one pixel downwards and rightwards.

This is a process called kerning, as explained by online magazine Slate.

Here, designers carefully space letters to be visually pleasing and consistent. The magazine remarked that the practice might be a “slightly compulsive” behaviour for designers.

“The bottom of the ‘l’ and ‘e’ did not line up horizontally and that, my friend, must have driven some design employee crazy,” one Reddit user pointed out.

However, it is unlikely that the decision was made lightly.

In February, Google revealed that it had conducted a vast research to pick the exact shade of blue for the ads it placed in Gmail.

Picking the right shade, which is different from the blue in Google’s search pages and other sites, had earned the company an additional $200 million annually.
