“There is only one way to protect ourselves from cyclones and storms. We have to create a green belt around Bangladesh,” she said on Thursday while inaugurating a programme at Dhaka’s Osmani Auditorium.

Referring to the Rampal power plant, the India- Bangladesh joint venture that has attracted much environmental concerns, Hasina said: “The project includes provisions for planting 500,000 trees for carbon absorption and creating a green belt.”

The 1,320-megawatt power plant is under construction at Bagerhat near the Sundarbans.

Environmental activists have been opposing it saying that the coal-fired plant will threaten the ecological balance of the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest of the world.

The government, however, insists that proper measures has been taken to protect the environment from pollution.

Hasina inaugurated 100 newly-built cyclone shelter centres and 53 flood shelter centres via video conference at the programme.

In keeping with this year's theme for the day 'Live to Tell', Bangladesh has its own theme 'Strategies to curb risks of disaster.'
