Sylhet district's transport owners and workers body and the Paribahan Malik-Sramik Sangram Committee called for the strike on Saturday evening.
Shangram Committee convenor Md Jamir Ahmed said the district administration had assured them of addressing their demands within 72 hours when they submitted a memorandum on Sept 14.
He said they were left with no choice as their demands had not been met until Saturday.
"Our strike will continue until our demands are met," he said.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Nurul Haque has said they had urged the transport owners and workers to call off their strike.
He said the protesters had been asked to sit for talks on Oct 21 as the deputy commissioner was out of Sylhet.
