Police have sought a five-day remand to interrogate one Md Ilias, 32, who was detained with the money, to get the answers.
The Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court will hear the plea on Thursday.
A police officer privy to the matter told bdnews24.com that they had learnt that the money was being taken to the land acquisition section at the Deputy Commissioner's office as bribe.
One 'Murad' of the land acquisition section was supposed to receive the money from Ilias, he said.
But investigations revealed that there was no official of that name in that section.
Meanwhile, the source of the money has also remained a mystery.
No one has so far claimed ownership of the money, said CMP's Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Manjur Morshed.
Ilias, who was carrying the money, has not yet revealed source of the money and or its destination.
Security around Chittagong court was ratcheted up after a purported militant threat to bomb the court building on Tuesday.
While searching for bombs, police found Tk 5.8 million in a bag Ilias was carrying.
Ilias told police he was from Brahmanbaria.
He claimed that he left home in a fit of rage and came to Chittagong on Sept 9.
But that did not explain why he carried the money or where he got it from, police said.
Kotwali Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Kamruzzaman is investigating the case filed over the seizure.
He said, "Ilias has been trying to create confusion by giving contradictory information.”
